Loss of Larry Joe Miggins |

Larry Joe
Miggins, son of chapter member
Larry Miggins, passed away September
14 as the result of a tragic highway
accident. Known as "Long
Ball" by his Houston Babies
Vintage Baseball teammates, Larry
Joe had played in every Babies
game since their inception. He
loved his teammates and the game
of baseball and we loved him.
He will be missed. Larry Joe is
survived by his wife, 2 adult
children, his mother and father
and 10 siblings. Read

| Houston Base Ball
Club Opens Season with Win |
|
|
|
Houston's
vintage Base Ball club, the Babies,
kicked off their 2012 season in
Sealy. The team faced the Katy
Combine in Sealy and opened the
year with a resounding 13-4 victory.
Alex "Beef" Hajduk had
three hits, including a home run,
to pace the Babies attack. Kyle
"3rd Degree" Burns also
had three hits for Houston, which
scored five runs in the third
and six in the fourth to break
open a see-saw contest. For a

Wally Moon
Launches Moon Shots at October
Meeting
When
Wally Moon stepped to the plate
in his rookie year for the St.
Louis Cardinals in 1954 he knew
that he was the only major league
player to have earned both a Bachelor
of Science Degree and a Masters
Degree. Using this knowledge and
his tremendous desire to succeed,
Wally went on to be Rookie of
the Year in the National League
that year, play on 3 winning World
Series teams and be a three time
NL All Star in his 12 year career.
This and many special moments,
including his "Moon Shots"
and television career were shared
by Wally with 26 SABR members
in attendance last Tuesday. A
quiet and gentle man, it was a
privilege to have this former
Cardinal and Dodger with us. To

Andy
Strasberg has had one incredible
life as the super-fan of former
Yankee great Roger Maris. Strasberg
spoke in February to the Houston
SABR chapter about his amazing personal
experiences with the late slugger
whom some still call baseball's
single-season home run king. That
journey began in 1960 when Maris
became a Yankee and continues in
2011 as Strasberg seeks to visit
all 50 states in commemorating the
50th anniversary of the former Yankee
slugger's record-breaking season.

| Dorrills Set to Celebrate
Marriage Milestone |

SABR
Houston Chair Bob Dorrill and his
wife Peggy were honored at the chapter's
March meeting in advance of their
50th wedding anniversary on May
12. Fellow chapter members Bill
McCurdy and Jimmy Wynn and their
wives, Norma and Marie, presented
Bob and Peggy a framed print of
Joe DiMaggio sliding into third
base, although McCurdy scores the
Dorrill union a "home run."
The entire chapter congratulates
Bob and Peggy and wishes them all
the best for their next 50. |

member Scott Barzilla has been nominated
for The Sporting News award for
statistical advancement. His latest
book, The Hall of Fame Index, takes
three popular sabermetrics and combines
